Sophie Charalambous’s drawings are equal parts observation and imagination. Using Indian ink on rough khadi paper, her quick eye and deft hand capture the very essence of her subjects: wet London streets; brightly lit kitchen interiors; scorched Cyprian rooftops; characters and places that feed into her moody, multi-layered large-scale works. Her distinctly theatrical visual language of silhouettes and stages creates scenes of heightened atmosphere and lyrical poetry.

“The drawings come from my life, stories, memories… I respond very much to tone and light, and find drawing at night - when the city comes to life and the atmosphere changes - particularly exciting and challenging.”
